I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD, which feels like the beginning of one journey and the end of another. While this is both a long time coming and so very new, it felt important to discuss my experience, my symptoms, my relief, and my struggle to mask this part of myself without delay. If this episode can spur conversations that help just one woman realize her mental health struggle is not a character flaw, then we’re on the right track.
ADHD diagnoses in creative, adult women are more and more common these days, and in this week’s episode, I discuss why I think that’s happening. We live in a world where women are told that our value comes from how much we produce, how well we take care of others, and how few waves we make. And if we’re good at getting things done, our struggles are often diminished because “but you’re so good at (xyz).”
Join me today as I discuss my personal journey to diagnosis, how I approached the conversation with my doctor and advocated for myself, why I was quick to say yes to medication, what I’m currently processing on the other side of things, and the importance of destigmatizing women’s mental health challenges.
