For so long we’ve been told that when we get stuck in procrastination, the solution is to bully ourselves.
We’ve been told to just power through and GET IT TOGETHER.
But if that worked, we’d have all met every goal by now, right?
Self-punishment – beating ourselves up – never works long-term.
So let’s try a new way. One that involves peace, love and joy. YAY!
There are a lot of reasons that we procrastinate, and most of them fall into one of these three categories:
Yay! If you are afraid – good news. You are a normal human with a healthy brain having a very normal response!
But bad news – your brain is going to keep being a brain, so you have to learn how to deal with fear.
(I have a whole episode about that here!)
The job here is not to eliminate fear. The job is for fear to no longer be the boss.
When you get stuck in a fear loop, you can’t figure out the next steps. So in this episode, I walk you through a journal exercise to help you get back in your body and move beyond fear.
And don’t worry if you don’t love journaling – I have some ideas for you about that here.
Often, the things we procrastinate are complicated – they have several steps, or may require a hard conversation, or maybe, what we need is literally buried under a bunch of other stuff we also need to deal with.
Or maybe, you are exhausted and burned out, and even tiny things really do feel insurmountable (because with your capacity right now, they are.)
So instead of bullying ourselves, we need to look at where and how we can build more capacity – do you need more sleep, do you need more boundaries?
This is actually the easiest one to solve!
Ready?
I want you to look at where you are trying to take big gigantic steps, and you need to take little teeny steps instead.
Big steps get glamorized and it may seem like everyone else is doing massive things every day, but I want to reassure you that most of us have to take baby steps, and baby steps add up.
I know that you are so good at overthinking. And it’s easy for the overthinking to take you down a dark path where you blame and shame yourself for getting stuck.
But you are not the bad guy, and it’s time to stop thinking you are.
Instead, I want you to download my brand new FREE guide all about procrastination, and learn to think about yourself as the hero of this story – p.s. This story is your life, and it’s a love story to boot!
